Graduated at FY2016: Intelligent Biomedical Systems Engineering

I was born in Aomori Prefecture and went to Tohoku University, School of Engineering, Department of Mechanical Intelligence and Aerospace Engineering. Until my third year as an undergraduate, I was rarely at home because I was absorbed in club activities six days a week. From my fourth year, I joined the Hayase Laboratory and began working on fluid analysis. I went out to dinner with the members of the lab (I especially liked BIG, which is a ramen restaurant near Jozenji-dori) and went to live concerts even after we had graduated. Actually, we were such a good team.

I enrolled in Tohoku University because I wanted to study phenomena of outer space back then, however, as I took various courses, I found the biomedical field to be very interesting. In particular, I was fascinated by the fact that biomedical devices are able to perform their functions and be useful to people even though it is such a harsh environment for them to function well inside human bodies. For that reason, I chose the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering to acquire not only engineering knowledge but also medical knowledge as a first step toward developing medical devices.

When I was a graduate student, I analyzed the blood flow in the left ventricle, which is a part of the human heart, by constructing the shape of the left ventricle based on MRI tomographic images and creating a program to change the shape over time. Because of the complex structures in the left ventricle, there are some areas where blood flow tends to stagnate, and we investigated the possibility of thrombus formation there. I had an opportunity to give an oral presentation not only in Japan but also at a conference in Singapore, which was a great experience for me although I got shocked at my limited English skills.

Students from various backgrounds gather here, so you can be exposed to diverse ways of thinking. I had classmates from various backgrounds, such as mechanical, information, medical, or from other universities. You can also learn a wide range of biological knowledge. Not only did we learn in the classroom, but we also had the opportunity to use donated bodies and animals, and every single lecture was much more intense than the undergraduate courses because of the shorter period of study. I am currently working for a medical device manufacturer and I often feel that my experiences in graduate school are still helping me a lot.

Although each one of us had specialized knowledge in different fields, we were all able to stand at the same starting line and learn from the ground up, so we were also able to tackle our work with the same fresh feeling as if we were freshmen in university. I am sure that I was able to spend a very fruitful graduate school life. I would like to express my gratitude to the staff for all their kind help and support.
