My research targets technologies leading to some specific medical devices, even if they might not appear in the world as commercial medical devices. However, I also firmly believe that one of the roles of medical engineering is to research the essential aspects of human medicine, such as cell biomechanics and neural circuit simulation. As the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering aims, we tend to focus on developing medical devices as the ultimate goal of our research. Still, to create such medical devices, we must instead focus on fundamental research to achieve true development. When I visited the Technical University of Lisbon in Portugal to sign interdepartmental and university agreements with overseas universities, I was impressed that medical engineering and bioengineering research were active. The Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering establishment started as a bridge between the electrical and mechanical engineering departments and the medical department. Tohoku University has the advantage of having a low barrier between neighbors. My laboratory is also collaborating with professors in chemistry and biotechnology. In the future, it will become more important to actively engage in collaborative research efforts with other bioengineering and life science researchers.
