Graduated at FY2016: Intelligent Biomedical Systems Engineering

I was born in Aomori Prefecture and went to Tohoku University, School of Engineering, Department of Mechanical Intelligence and Aerospace Engineering. Until my third year as an undergraduate, I was rarely at home because I was absorbed in club activities six days a week. From my fourth year, I joined the Hayase Laboratory and began working on fluid analysis. I went out to dinner with the members of the lab (I especially liked BIG, which is a ramen restaurant near Jozenji-dori) and went to live concerts even after we had graduated. Actually, we were such a good team.

I enrolled in Tohoku University because I wanted to study phenomena of outer space back then, however, as I took various courses, I found the biomedical field to be very interesting. In particular, I was fascinated by the fact that biomedical devices are able to perform their functions and be useful to people even though it is such a harsh environment for them to function well inside human bodies. For that reason, I chose the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering to acquire not only engineering knowledge but also medical knowledge as a first step toward developing medical devices.

When I was a graduate student, I analyzed the blood flow in the left ventricle, which is a part of the human heart, by constructing the shape of the left ventricle based on MRI tomographic images and creating a program to change the shape over time. Because of the complex structures in the left ventricle, there are some areas where blood flow tends to stagnate, and we investigated the possibility of thrombus formation there. I had an opportunity to give an oral presentation not only in Japan but also at a conference in Singapore, which was a great experience for me although I got shocked at my limited English skills.

Students from various backgrounds gather here, so you can be exposed to diverse ways of thinking. I had classmates from various backgrounds, such as mechanical, information, medical, or from other universities. You can also learn a wide range of biological knowledge. Not only did we learn in the classroom, but we also had the opportunity to use donated bodies and animals, and every single lecture was much more intense than the undergraduate courses because of the shorter period of study. I am currently working for a medical device manufacturer and I often feel that my experiences in graduate school are still helping me a lot.

Although each one of us had specialized knowledge in different fields, we were all able to stand at the same starting line and learn from the ground up, so we were also able to tackle our work with the same fresh feeling as if we were freshmen in university. I am sure that I was able to spend a very fruitful graduate school life. I would like to express my gratitude to the staff for all their kind help and support.

Master course (FY2020): Neural Electronic Engineering

My name is Shinkawa and I am from Sapporo, Hokkaido. I graduated from Tohoku University and entered Tohoku University Graduate School. After entering Tohoku University, I experienced both the hardships and joys of living on my own away from my hometown. I became more interested in cooking and food, so I like to get together with my friends and have dinner parties. Nowadays, we cannot get together with many people because of the current situation in the world, but as a person who is involved in medical engineering, I hope that the situation will end soon and a peaceful era will come.

When I was a senior in high school, I was interested in the demonstration of Watanabe Laboratory at the Tohoku University Open Campus (OC), which is my current laboratory. I wanted to continue my undergraduate research, and I would be able to gain experience that would be difficult to gain in a normal classroom setting through the content of classes and dissection practice at the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering, so I applied to the Graduate School.

Currently, we are constructing a rehabilitation system for paralyzed patients by combining two devices: the FES (Functional Electrical Stimulation) that can externally induce muscle activity in the stimulated area by electrical stimulation and a pedal-powered wheelchair, which is similar to a bicycle. Paralyzed patients are unable to move the paralyzed part of their body voluntarily, but it is believed that they can reconstruct their movements through rehabilitation. I hope that my research can contribute to improving the QOL of paralyzed patients.

It is often said that we specialize in engineering related to medicine, which many other universities do not offer. Another feature is that we have lectures by medical school professors and special practical training. Therefore, I believe that students can gain experience and conduct research that can only be obtained at the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering in Japan and that the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering provides a wonderful environment for students who wish to enter this field.

I have heard that the number of applicants to the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering is increasing every year (although I am not sure because it is a rumor), but I think that this is because it is a very attractive graduate school and a place where you can gain valuable experience. I would like to encourage those who are aiming for the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering to follow through on their ambitions. As a member of the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering, I hope that my research will be of use to others, and I am sure that the new research started by new members will also be of use to others one day.

Graduated at FY2019: Intelligent Biomedical Systems Engineering

Hello everyone, I am WenHsiang Wu from Taiwan, who graduated from 2019/09 Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering at Tohoku University and belongs to Intelligent Biomedical Systems Engineering laboratory. I am currently working as a research & development engineer in automatic driving field. When I was a student, I completed my bachelor’s degree in National Chung Hsing University in Taiwan. Because I was also interested in medical field, I decided to study in the department of the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering at Tohoku University after I finished my bachelor’s degree.

Before finishing from bachelor’s degree, I started to be interested in the medical field. Because my background is engineering, I try to consider how to apply my engineering knowledge to solve medical problems, and then I chose cross-field departments which are called Biomedical Engineering to be my next major. The merit of a Cross-field major is that it also enabled me to have the opportunity to learn more knowledge in different fields. The reason why I chose the Department of Biomedical Engineering in Tohoku University is that compared with the other university’s Biomedical Engineering, it is an independent research institute that allows Biomedical Engineering to exist in various departments, for example, you can see some research topics related to electric engineering or mechanic engineering but not limited. Such diversity enables students to find research topics related to their professional fields or what they are interested in after entering Tohoku University Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering.

When I was a student at Tohoku University, I mainly developed an accurate lung tumor tracking system. When patients undergo radiotherapy for lung cancer, the tumor will keep moving due to breathing. In order to advance the treatment quality, we need a real-time tumor monitoring system to irradiate the tumor precisely. However, if we monitor the tumor by using an X-ray image sequence, it always shows that the target tumor often overlaps with surrounding tissues or bones and with bad image quality, so accurate tumor tracking is difficult. In such a case, my research topic is how to accurately track lung tumors in blurry medical images sequence.

The specialty of the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering at Tohoku University is the diverse courses. Because biomedical engineering is a cross-field major, the courses should cover a wide range. So, students can take some courses in various departments according to their interests and research topics. Therefore, students in the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering can often be seen in the Department of Electrical Engineering or Materials or Mechanical Department, etc.

The Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering at Tohoku University provides a wealth of resources to students, for example, providing the environments for doing advanced research, diverse courses, and many scholarships. Based on the good points I mentioned, I highly recommended foreign students choose this department. Even if you cannot speak Japanese, there are many professional courses in English you can choose. If there are some courses you are very interested in but it is in Japanese-only, the teachers will provide you an English textbook or some related materials on the class, and carefully explain to you in English. So, don’t worry about the language, if you are interested in the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering at Tohoku University, please don’t be hesitate to apply, we are welcome you to join us.
