Graduated at FY2019: Intelligent Biomedical Systems Engineering
皆さんこんにちは、台湾出身のWenHsiang Wuと申します。知能システム医工学研究室に所属していて、2019年9月に東北大学大学院医工学研究科を卒業しました。私は現在、自動運転分野の研究開発エンジニアとして働いています。大学生時代は台湾の国立中興大学で学士号を取得しました。学士号を取得した後、医療分野にも興味があったため、東北大学大学院医工学研究科医工学専攻で学ぶことにしました。
Hello everyone, I am WenHsiang Wu from Taiwan, who graduated from 2019/09 Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering at Tohoku University and belongs to Intelligent Biomedical Systems Engineering laboratory. I am currently working as a research & development engineer in automatic driving field. When I was a student, I completed my bachelor’s degree in National Chung Hsing University in Taiwan. Because I was also interested in medical field, I decided to study in the department of the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering at Tohoku University after I finished my bachelor’s degree.
私は学士号を取得する前から、医療分野に興味を持ち始めました。私のバックグラウンドが工学であることから、医学的な問題を解決するために工学の知識をどのように応用するかを考え、次の専攻として医工学と呼ばれる分野横断的な学科を選択しました。分野横断的な専攻のメリットは、様々な分野の知識を学ぶことができたことです。私が東北大学の医工学研究科を選んだ理由は、他の大学の医工学専攻と比べて、独立した研究機関であるため様々な分野が存在し、例えば、電気工学や機械工学に関連した研究テーマを見つけることができます。このような多様性があるからこそ、東北大学大学院医工学研究科に入学してからも、自分の専門分野に関連した研究テーマや興味のある研究テーマを見つけることができると思います。
Before finishing from bachelor’s degree, I started to be interested in the medical field. Because my background is engineering, I try to consider how to apply my engineering knowledge to solve medical problems, and then I chose cross-field departments which are called Biomedical Engineering to be my next major. The merit of a Cross-field major is that it also enabled me to have the opportunity to learn more knowledge in different fields. The reason why I chose the Department of Biomedical Engineering in Tohoku University is that compared with the other university’s Biomedical Engineering, it is an independent research institute that allows Biomedical Engineering to exist in various departments, for example, you can see some research topics related to electric engineering or mechanic engineering but not limited. Such diversity enables students to find research topics related to their professional fields or what they are interested in after entering Tohoku University Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering.
東北大学の学生時代には、正確な肺腫瘍追跡システムを主に開発しました。肺がんの放射線治療を受けると、患者さんは呼吸によって腫瘍が動き続けます。治療の質を上げるためには、正確に腫瘍に放射線を照射するためのリアルタイムの腫瘍監視システムが必要です。しかし、X線画像シーケンスを用いて腫瘍をモニターすると、常に対象となる腫瘍が周囲の組織や骨と重なっていたり、画質が悪かったりすることが多く、正確な腫瘍追跡は難しいのが現状です。このような場合に、ぼやけた医用画像シーケンスで肺腫瘍を正確に追跡する方法の研究です。
When I was a student at Tohoku University, I mainly developed an accurate lung tumor tracking system. When patients undergo radiotherapy for lung cancer, the tumor will keep moving due to breathing. In order to advance the treatment quality, we need a real-time tumor monitoring system to irradiate the tumor precisely. However, if we monitor the tumor by using an X-ray image sequence, it always shows that the target tumor often overlaps with surrounding tissues or bones and with bad image quality, so accurate tumor tracking is difficult. In such a case, my research topic is how to accurately track lung tumors in blurry medical images sequence.
東北大学大学院医工学研究科の特徴は、多様な科目があることです。医工学は分野横断的な専攻であるため、幅広い分野をカバーしていなければなりません。学生は自分の興味や研究テーマに応じて様々な専攻の科目を履修することができます。そのため、医工学研究科の学生は、電気工学科や材料工学科や機械工学科などの講義で見かけられることが多いです。
The specialty of the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering at Tohoku University is the diverse courses. Because biomedical engineering is a cross-field major, the courses should cover a wide range. So, students can take some courses in various departments according to their interests and research topics. Therefore, students in the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering can often be seen in the Department of Electrical Engineering or Materials or Mechanical Department, etc.
東北大学大学院医工学研究科では、先端的な研究を行うための環境、多様なコース、多くの奨学金制度など、学生に豊富なリソースを提供しています。以上のような良い点を踏まえて、私は留学生にこの専攻を選ぶことを強くお勧めします。日本語ができなくても、英語での専門的なコースがたくさんあります。また、興味があっても日本語のみのコースがある場合は、先生が英語のテキストや関連資料を用意してくれて、丁寧に英語で説明してくれますので、語学の心配はありません。言葉の心配はありませんので、東北大学大学院医工学研究科に興味のある方は、ぜひお気軽にお応募ください。
The Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering at Tohoku University provides a wealth of resources to students, for example, providing the environments for doing advanced research, diverse courses, and many scholarships. Based on the good points I mentioned, I highly recommended foreign students choose this department. Even if you cannot speak Japanese, there are many professional courses in English you can choose. If there are some courses you are very interested in but it is in Japanese-only, the teachers will provide you an English textbook or some related materials on the class, and carefully explain to you in English.
