これまで、本当に目の前のことを一個ずつ解決していこうとしか考えてなくて、はっきりとした考えは持ってはいないんですけど、やはり、工学も医工学も共通しているのは人の役に立つものを作っていきたいというところなんですね。それが、対象が一般の方々の日常生活なのか、患者さんが困っている状況を解決するためなのか、それだけの違いだと思います。そういう目線で行くと、患者さんがちょっとでも喜んでもらえる技術を提供する、そうであれば全て医工学なのではないでしょうか。それは、先端的で高度な工学技術を応用したものもあれば、いま目の前で困ってる患者さんのために、本当にそのへんにある簡単なもので組み上げたものも、全てが医工学になると思います。患者さんが切実に求めているものは、「いま」困っているので「いま」なんとかしてほしい、ということだと思うんですね。高度な技術開発も、簡単に日常応用できる技術も、どちらも大切で、開発していきたいと思っています。

I have tried to solve the problems in front of me one by one, so I don’t have a clear idea of what biomedical engineering is, but what engineering and biomedical engineering have in common is that they both want to make things that are useful to people. I think the only difference is whether the target is the daily life of people or whether it is to solve a patient’s problem. From that point of view, I think that all that provides technology that makes patients happy, even if only a little bit, is biomedical engineering. I think that all of them are biomedical engineering, including those that apply advanced, high-level technology, and those that are made up of the simple things that are really there for the patient who is in trouble right now. I think what patients are sincerely hoping for is that they want to solve it “now” because they are in trouble “now.” I would like to develop both advanced technology and technology that can be easily applied to the daily life of patients.
