(English)For students of interests
To all students interested in our research
Fourth-year students
The “Nuclear Physics” course accepts new fourth-year students of the Department of Physics at Tohoku University. Since the majority of students assigned to this course will go on to graduate school, students will study basic nuclear and particle physics in a seminar format using textbooks during their fourth year.
Graduate research: Students conduct physics experiments and research on the development of various detectors using high-energy electron beams and gamma-ray beams from the accelerator, which is the highest energy accelerator owned by the center in Japan.
Graduate School
In graduate school, students do not “study” physics but conduct research. In high school and undergraduate programs, students took classes and lectures, studied for exams, and received passing scores to advance to the next level.
(1) Master’s Course
In the master’s course, students further deepen their understanding of physics through lectures and seminars, while working closely on themes related to research being promoted by their research groups. In addition to conducting experiments in laboratories and other research sites, students repeatedly experience the cycle of investigating textbooks and literature, thinking for themselves, discussing with many people, and reporting the results of their research, with the goal of developing the ability to set up, tackle, and solve problems on their own.
(2) Doctoral Course
Doctoral students are full-fledged researchers. D. students are full-fledged researchers, and they promote nuclear research together as fellow researchers, i.e., as collaborators. We, the faculty members, support our doctoral students so that they can become independent researchers in the future by conducting the world’s most advanced research.
(3) Scholarships, etc.
There are multiple possibilities of financial support for doctoral students. D. students currently enrolled in my laboratory, as well as master’s students who plan to continue their studies, receive financial support from Tohoku University’s Graduate Program for International Universities, GPPU, and the Institute of Chemical Research’s JRA program. There is also an avenue to receive support from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) as a special researcher.

If you are interested in our laboratory, the physics research we are promoting, or have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Toshimi Suda (suda[at]lns.tohoku.ac.jp).
The Research Center for Electron Photon Science also holds an open-house event once a year, where you can see the large accelerator and measurement devices that are not usually open to the public. For details, please visit the website of the Research Center for Electron Photon Science.
