Tohoku University created a Research Program “Frontier Research in Duo (FRiD)” in September 2019.
This program aims to create a new value and new research areas that are not focused on preconceptions by supporting a research project whose topic will potentially become a trend in 10 to 15 years, or which is at an initial stage for the creation of an emerging idea, and promote strongly development of world leading research frontier and new research areas.
The research group of this project must be composed of two or three core researchers belonging to different departments and partner with an overseas research institution(s) as a research collaborator(s). Adopted research projects are supported by 5 to 10 million yen per fiscal year for each research project (total 450 million yen), using the University’s independent funding, “Presidential Budget”.
This time, we conducted a rigorous review of 49 aspiring research projects trying to create new research areas, and adopted 9 research projects. All research projects are in a cross- sectoral collaboration, and research group including researchers from overseas research institution(s).
Therefore, they are expected to become a research that will be world-leading in its field in the future. In addition, by the international collaboration supported with this program, they are expected to be pioneers of new research frontiers and create new research areas.
Furthermore, in addition to this program, Tohoku University has already conducted “Tohoku University Tenure Track System using Frontier Research Institute for Interdisciplinary Sciences” ahead of other universities, which targets about 50 people and provides stable and independent research environments for excellent young researchers adopted by international recruitment.
The “Technical Support Center (TSC)”, a research facility management organization, will also support the preferential sharing of research facilities for young researchers.
In this way, Tohoku University is actively working on comprehensive support for young researchers as a package from both the software and hardware perspectives in order to strengthen our research capabilities.
